*What is your position for your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
We are the co-founders and directors! We facilitate the majority of the operations of the organization, from foster coordinating to adoption processes and all our social media/online presence, among other tasks.
*What is the name of your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
CaliCan Rescue Foundation
*Where are you located?
Edmonton AB – but we are a foster run organization with no shelter.
*Do you offer any awareness programs to your community?
When families call looking to adopt a dog, or when they find out what we do and they ask why…we provide them information relating to reported animal euthanasia rates. We provide nutrition and well-being awareness to foster, adoptive, and even general inquiry families. These conversations include discussing the importance of spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchipping, what to do in the event your pet goes missing, and encouraging people to research before acquiring a new dog (with a strong insistence they adopt, of course).
We visit a local school every year, as well, and chat with them about rescue dogs. They really enjoy seeing the little dogs come into their school grounds and getting a chance to engage with them. It’s a fun way to bring awareness at such a young age.
*How long has your Animal Rescue/Shelter been around for?
We began planning the start of CaliCan in November 2009 – our first flight of 3 rescue dogs took place January 30, 2010.
*What types of animals do you have at your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
We help dogs that are under 25lbs and over 10 months of age.
*If someone wanted to become a volunteer, how could they?
We are always looking for foster homes and event volunteers! People interested just have to send an email to email@example.com for an application form for either task!
*What types of items do you take as donations?
We are always needing small collars, leashes, clean blankets, Acana or Orijen dog food, small harnesses, pee pads, gas cards, shampoo, and clean dog sweaters.
*Do you have any fundraisers coming up that you want my viewers to know about?
On July 12, 2014 we are hosting our 4th Annual BBQ Fundraiser! All details can be found on our website and Facebook page as they become confirmed.
*What is the adoption process like?
Families that are interested in adopting a small breed dog are encouraged to check out our website (calicanrescue.com) for dogs currently available. We operate on best fit as opposed to first come first served, so whether you are the only applicant or the fourth applicant, we make sure to fit what you’re wanting in a new dog to the dogs we have available now or in future.
When you see that special little guy or gal please send us an email through their profile or to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will happily schedule a phone interview with you at a time that works best for both of us. From there we will find out about you, and the life the dog may be able to expect with you. We will fill you in on details about the dog your interested in, answering as many questions as you may have as well to the best we can. After that, we talk to our Foster Home to see what they think – afterall, they’ve spent the most time with them.
If they feel you are the best fit, we’ll arrange a 7-day trial visit. At the start of the trial visit we collect 50% of the adoption fees. Throughout the 7-day trial visit we encourage regular updates to know how things are going. If there are any weird behavioral or other quirks, we’ll happily provide you resources and advice. Should the trial visit work out, we’ll come to your home and finalize the adoption. This includes collecting the rest of the fees, signing a contract, handing over medical records and taking a family photo!
Should the trial visit not work out, your deposit will be returned when we come back and get the dog into foster care. We then ask a few exit questions of what didn’t work out, and start again when you’re ready.
Our adoption fees are $280 and covers the cost of spay/neuter, all vaccines, deworming, microchipping, heart worm testing (for dogs coming from California), and any additional vet costs necessary to get the dog healthy for their new family. *What does your shelter/rescue hope to achieve in 2014 We hope to continue to grow in awareness of what we are doing, and the why behind it. Thousands of dogs are euthanized every year in Canada, tens of thousands in a small city in Central Valley California. As long as dogs are dying, adopting should be the only solution.
We also would like to begin fundraising efforts to better support not only our local surrender program but to also start putting money aside for a new shelter at some point in the future.
*Anything else you want to add?
Not only do we assist small breed dogs from Central Valley, California, but we also assist local families find new homes for their beloved dogs. We understand that when a family is faced with the decision of having to surrender their animal, it is a decision not reached lightly. We do our very best to make the transition as easy as possible.
If we do not have the resources to help you, we will assist in networking to other rescues to see if they can help instead. If we can help, we do a short interview with you to understand your pup(s) a little better. We will need to charge a nominal surrender fee, to assist in covering expenses such as getting them fixed, vaccinated, and checked out. We will also move your dog into a foster home, for further temperament assessment to ensure we know enough of them to get them adopted to the right family. Every dog that comes into our care is treated with the same respect and care as our own personal dogs, so we will strive to ensure the very best home is found for your dog.
